HALLOWEEN READS 2014
Saturday, November 01, 2014
I love everything about Halloween! From scary costumes to treats, creepy decorations, ghost stories, horror movies, chilly air and the list goes on. For someone who’s not born in a country where majority of the people celebrate Halloween, I crave for that kind of experience and adventure. I’m just right here, drowning in the greatness of halloween imagination I can think of. Yeah, that sucks.
Anyway, like I said I always seek for a halloween adventure, like in the movies! Where my friends/cousins and I go trick or treating then we’re trapped in a house of a witch and the mission is to escape from it or something like that. I want that kind of adventure but of course I want to stay alive in the end. Hahaha IKR? I’m weird.
And of course Halloween feels wouldn’t be complete without reading a book! So here are my choice books to get into the Halloween feels, and i’m sure you’ll love it all. Books that are not tooooo scary and heavy to read. Seriously, you must give it a try! :)
1. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children & Hollow City
by Ransom Riggs
A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs.
It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.
2. Ghostgirl Series
by Tonya Hurley
Charlotte Usher feels practically invisible at school, and then one day she really is invisible. Even worse: she’s dead. And all because she choked on a gummy bear. But being dead doesn’t stop Charlotte from wanting to be popular; it just makes her more creative about achieving her goal.
If you thought high school was a matter of life or death, wait till you see just how true that is. In this satirical, yet heartfelt novel, Hurley explores the invisibility we all feel at some times and the lengths we’ll go to be seen.
3. Love Letters to the Dead
by Ava Dellaira
Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to the dead—to people like Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger, Amelia Earhart, and Amy Winehouse—though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating the choppy waters of new friendships, learning to live with her splintering family, falling in love for the first time, and, most important, trying to grieve for May. But how do you mourn for someone you haven’t forgiven?
It’s not until Laurel has written the truth about what happened to herself that she can finally accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was—lovely and amazing and deeply flawed—can she truly start to discover her own path.
4. The Mediator Series
by Meg Cabot
people. And they won’t leave her alone until she helps them resolve their unfinished business with the living. But Jesse, the hot ghost haunting her bedroom, doesn’t seem to need her help. Which is a relief, because Suze has just moved to sunny California and plans to start fresh, with trips to the mall instead of the cemetery, and surfing instead of spectral visitations.
But the very first day at her new school, Suze realizes it’s not that easy. There’s a ghost with revenge on her mind … and Suze happens to be in the way.
Thank you for reading and I hope you’re having a helluva Halloween this year! Happy Halloween! :)
